Phoenix Chinese American Citizens Alliance celebrates 40 years of community service

              -By John H. Tang-

For forty years Phoenix Chinese American Citizens Alliance (PCACA) has been serving the community in Phoenix and its brother chapters nation wide. On Saturday, May 3, 6:00 pm, at the Great Wall Restaurant, PCACA will hold a special celebration commemorating 40 years of service, cultural awareness and civil rights leadership to the Chinese community. Everyone is invited to join in on this historic gala event.

It all started way back in 1974 when Wing F. Ong met with several leaders of the Phoenix Chinese Community in discussing the possibility of forming a Phoenix CACA chapter. By-laws were written and PCACA was launched.

Wing F. Ong was elected as the new organization’s first President and represented Phoenix at the 1975 National CACA Convention held in Portland, Oregon. At this time CACA was an all men organization and it was Wing F. Ong that introduced a resolution allowing women in the organization. Phoenix was the CACA National Convention site in 1997.

In 2011 ?2012 PCACA worked very hard in successfully gaining support necessary in the passing of S.R. 201 and H.R, 683 for an Expression of Regret for the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act by Congress in 1882.

”For forty years, the Alliance has continued to work on issues that affect the rights and welfare of Chinese Americans locally and nationally. As we move forward, PCACA will partner energetically with other organizaitons in the community to be more effective in service,” said PCACA President Elaine Wong. ” We welcome the community to join us on Saturday, May 3, as we celebrate this milestone occasion of memories and the past accomplishments of the local Alliance while looking at the future.”
