Experimental Chinese brush paintings by students of instructor Joan Yen went on display for public viewing on Monday, October 27, in the Chinle Building at Glendale Community College North located in north Glendale. Seventeen students presented their best paintings honoring the memory of their former teacher Joan Yen.
Joan’s family attended the opening reception as honored guest of the art exhibition and was very impressed with all of the student’s creativity. Joan gave them the motivation to create with their feelings and it showed in the exhibit.
”I was very impressed and proud with what I saw in the creativity of the paintings of the students, said Joan’s husband, Richard Yen. ”They were certainly motivated by Joan in their work and all a great work of art.”
As an instructor of Chinese art for many years at Scottsdale Community College Yen retired and continued teaching adult classes at Shemer Art Studio in Scottsdale, and Phoenix College. All of her Experimental Chinese Brush Art Painting classes became very popular and filled to capacity. Today, the class is continued and is taught by Phoenix College instructor Joy Baker.
Student Karl Milbauer said, ”By sharing the history and traditions of Chinese painting and calligraphy, Joan gave us the gift of a strong foundation to evolve our own art while maintaining a connection to the past.”
The Joan Yen Student Chinese Art Exhibition will be on display at GCC North from October 27 to November 13. Glendale Community College North is located at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road in Glendale.
