The opening concert is programed with public’s highly favorites: Mozart’s Overture from the Magic Flute, Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op.16, and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in Bb Major. Featured concert pianist Qingqing Ye is to perform the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s renowned Piano Concerto in A minor with the symphony. The work is among Grieg’s earliest important works, written by the 24-year-old composer in 1868. Grieg’s concerto is often compared to the Piano Concerto of Robert Schumann ?it is in the same key, the opening descending flourish on the piano is similar, and the overall style is considered to be closer to Schumann than any other single composer. The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, was the only concerto Grieg completed.
A true gifted young artist who has received top prizes from national to international piano competitions, Ye has astonished the audience and critics by the depth of his musical insight, dazzling technique as well as his magnetic stage presence. He was appointed as the Artist-In-Resident by the Scottsdale Philharmonic after his performing Liszt’s first piano concerto in Eb major with the orchestra in the season of 2013.
Starting his piano training at the tender age of four, Ye received his Bachelor’s Degree in piano performance from Bowling Green State University under Maxim Mogilevsky and Master’s Degree in piano performance from Northwestern University under Alan Chow. Currently he is a doctoral candidate in piano performance at ASU under the guidance of Professor Walter Cosand and serving as a faculty associate for ASU School of Music Prep Program.
Besides being awarded the full scholarship from both institutes, he is also a recipient of the National Scholarship by the YAMAHA Music Foundation of China, the first prize winner at the 2006 Masterworks International Music Festival competition in Indiana, as well as the first prize at the 2005 Lima Young Artists Piano Competition in Ohio.
Ye has become one of the most vigorous artists in the valley–his solo recitals could be heard in Tempe Center for the Art, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and Chandler Center for the Arts. He also has been invited to teach master classes and perform in some highly acclaimed universities in China, e.g. Chongqing Normal University and Beifang (North) University of Nationalities.
