9th Annual “Taste of Asia” Awards Banquet to honor

　　Phoenix, Arizona: On the evening of May 10, 2014, Asian Pacific Community in Action (APCA) will honor St. Luke’s Health Initiative, Dr. Anthony Yeung, and Josefina”Jo” Barone, MBA, RN, for their contributions to improving the health and lives of countless Arizonans. Beginning at 5:30 pm, the event will be held at the Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort, 5401 N. Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale. Always a fun-filled evening, the banquet includes a talent showcase, silent auction, and Asian hors d’oeuvres. More than 350 local Asian and Pacific Islander community members, governmental officials, and health care providers are expected to attend.

　　　　　　　　　　
　　St. Luke’s Health Initiatives (SLHI) is a Phoenix-based public foundation whose mission -to inform, connect and support efforts to improve the health of individuals and communities in Arizona-?is carried out through Health Policy, Community Development, and Capacity Building. Established in 1907 as a non-profit hospital, SLHI sold all of its facilities in 1995 and uses its financial assets to fund charitable activities and engage in public education activities.

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

　　Dr. Anthony Yeung is a board certified orthopedic and spine surgeon who pioneered the development of the Yeung Endoscopic Spine System (YESS TM, a minimally invasive spinal diagnostic and surgical technique. Dr. Anthony Yeung and his wife, Eileen, have donated $2.5 Million to develop a comprehensive spine center at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Yeung is also a Past President of the Maricopa County Medical Society, the Arizona Orthopedic Society, and served on the Arizona Medical Association board.

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
　　Josefina ”Jo”Barone’s lifelong career in nursing started in 1977 when she graduated Cum Laude from the Central Philippine University. She settled in Phoenix in 1992 to work with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and retired as Manager of the Internal Medicine Department’s Multi-Specialty and Residency Clinics and The Academic Hospitalists. Her profound passion to serve has taken her across the U.S. and overseas. She is an avid volunteer for the Philippine Nurse’s Association, APCA, The 3000 Club’s medical missions to the Philippines, and other organizations.

　　Asian Pacific Community in Action is as a grassroots non-profit agency created to ensure culturally responsive health information and health services for low-income Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Established in 2002, APCA remains the only organization in Arizona that provides comprehensive health services specifically for these communities. APCA also serves refugees from Asia and other continents. APCA’s mission is to provide services, advocacy and education for diverse communities resulting in a healthier and more empowered population overall.
